Overview

Helping people take control of their family health.

Carebook was founded to help Canadians take control of their health and transform their future. They provide insights and tools that help people work towards better health outcomes – for their themselves and their family members.

Prior to working with UXperts, Carebook had committed to a customer that required the adaptation of an existing web application into a mobile app. At the time of engagement, some ideation had taken the form of a mobile app prototype which relied on a conversational AI. The creation of this technology was not possible in the timeline agreed to with their customer.

Carebook needed to reimagine an old desktop-only web application as a simple mobile app—based on an existing feature set.

The original Carebook web interface was not compatible with the constraints of mobile devices.

To create a more robust and scalable user experience, Mathieu Lampron, VP Products at Carebook, looked to UXperts to help craft the solution.

Obstacles & Constraints

Adapt an existing web application into a simplified mobile experience

The core foundation of Carebook’s business is in helping people make concrete, practical changes to their own and their family’s health. Insights were provided through assessments, and organizational tools were provided to help stay on top of family health. Carebook also added behavioural change programs to the app, to assist customers with improvements to their personal health.

Since the product was complex in nature, the structure and presentation of information was critically important. As an innovative company with a pioneering approach to health, it was especially important for customers to understand they could own and improve their own health.

The challenge for was to include all of these considerations in a single mobile app, on a short timeline.

Requirements

  • Chat-based new user on boarding and initial health assessment

  • Display relative risk level for a variety of prominent health conditions

  • Create an information & interaction model shared by 3 divergent behavioural change programs (diet transformation, exercise, quit smoking)

  • Adapt the information model from an existing web platform to a mobile-friendly format for personal and family health data

  • Oversee company rebranding exercise

  • Work with product owner and developers to handle scope tradeoffs and deliver a highly polished UI

Actions

When Carebook was working to deliver the first version of a new app, he worked with UXperts to create the mobile experience from the ground up.

We ran workshop sessions to solve what turned out to be a complex challenge of information structures for behavioural change programs

UXperts did multiple user studies to understand usability and other concerns. One of the things the team needed to navigate was conflicting Android/iOS platform UI conventions.

Based on existing research and assumptions, UXperts created user flows and information architecture diagrams, which were then mobile app prototypes and high fidelity interface mockups. This work was performed collaboratively with Carebook product ownership and technical stakeholders. Design deliverables were used to facilitate user stories, which were in turn delivered to an overseas development team for implementation and testing.

During the development process the team at UXperts facilitated workshop sessions and conducted independent user testing and research. Carebook incorporated these learnings into the final app design and continues to benefit from accumulated insights. In addition, UXperts oversaw the redesign of Carebook’s corporate brand identity, which in turn influenced the outcome of the app interface.
